News and Upcoming Performance

As Sanspointe’s 10th season is well underway, I would like to share some news and invite you to our upcoming performance at the Birmingham Museum of Art.

Rhea Speights, Sanspointe’s artistic director since September 2011, is stepping down from this position at the end of this year.  Rhea has been a member of Sanspointe since 2005, and has choreographed 16 new works and directed five projects for the company.   She is currently in her second year pursuing her MFA at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne.  Rhea will continue to work with the company on projects when possible.  And, we wish her the best with grad school!

I am happy to announce that Taryn Packheiser Brown will be assuming the role of Interim Artistic Director in 2014, and is working with the board of directors now to plan an exciting season!   Taryn first joined Sanspointe as a volunteer in Dances Along the Line, April 2011.  She performed in The Golden Record library tour and recently choreographed for Dances Along the Line (2012) and Sanspointe Turns 10!.

Rounding out this season, we have an exciting collaboration underway.  Sanspointe artists are working with DC-based choreographer Sandra Atkinson and Minneapolis-based choreographer Lynn Andrews to create and perform a series of dances in response to artwork in an exhibition titled Etched in Collective History, curated by Jeffreen Hayes, at the Birmingham Museum of Art.  Performances are at 2pm and 4pm on November 3rd.  We hope you will join us for one of them!
