Sanspointe Dance Company will be hitting the road this summer (June 6-10th) for their second AL tour, Moving Ground. The company will share old and new dance works with four cities in the state of Alabama.
Moving Ground will feature works from the company’s repertory as well as new choreography from Anna Foshee and Sara Wallace. Wallace’s new piece, set on the entire cast of the tour, will tell Birmingham’s history through movement. Wallace states, “On Moving Ground is a work dedicated to the city’s history, people, architecture and evolving landscape – meshing Birmingham’s past triumphs and hardships with its future goals.” Finishing the lineup, the company will present a structured improvisation set that will allow the audience to participate. Each tour location will include a free Modern/Contemporary dance master class before each performance. Company members will lead a class geared towards teen to adult ages at an intermediate level and up. Structured improvisation guidelines will be taught during the master class so that students who wish to participate can join the company members during the performance.
Artistic Director, Anna Foshee, states, “Most of our site locations for “Moving Ground” are in studios, or small theatre spaces. We thrive in these types of settings. There is something invigorating about being in a space that allows the audience to be up close and personal with the dancers. This also allows the performer the opportunity to draw energy from the audience making it a versatile experience for everyone. The simplicity of our summer tour allows us to move into a space, show new dance works, and reach other parts of the state that have less opportunity to see live dance.”
Moving Ground is made possible with support from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Performances will take place at Madison Ballet in Huntsville (June 6), The Dance Foundation in Birmingham (June 7), Gadsden’s Downtown Dance Conservatory (June 9) and Clark Hall at the University of Alabama (June 10). Moving Ground is free to the public at every location. All master classes will be from 5-6:30pm and all performances will begin at 6:45pm. Sanspointe is thankful for the relationships at these locations and hopeful for the creation of new networks across Alabama through an increased touring presence. See below for site addresses:
